Timang Beach Special Destination

Timang Beach (Pantai Timang) is a rugged, scenic coastal destination in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, renowned for its adrenaline-pumping manual gondola and suspension bridge. Located approximately 3 hours from Yogyakarta city, it offers a dramatic landscape of steep rocky cliffs and powerful Indian Ocean waves.
Important Travel Tips – Safety:

    • Swimming is strictly prohibited due to treacherous currents and large waves.
    • Accessibility: The Jeep ride is very bumpy and not recommended for pregnant women or those with back problems.
    • Cash Only: Most facilities, including the gondola and local food stalls, only accept cash payments.
    • Combined Tours: Many visitors pair Timang Beach with a morning visit to Jomblang Cave to maximize their day trip from Yogyakarta.

Attractions

  • The Manual Gondola: Originally built in 1997 by local fishermen to harvest lobsters on the nearby Panjang Island, this wooden cable car is hand-pulled by operators using a pulley system.
  • Panjang Island (Watu Panjang): A small rocky island roughly 100 meters offshore. Visitors can cross via the gondola or a suspension bridge to explore the rock formations and watch massive waves crash against the cliffs.
  • Lobster Culinary: The area is a natural lobster habitat. Local eateries, such as Kedai Lobster Pak Sis, serve fresh lobster caught by the island’s fishermen.
